“Don’t show off every day, or you’ll stop surprising people. There must always be some novelty left over. The person who displays a little more of it each day keeps up expectations, and no one ever discovers the limits of his talent.”

~ Baltasar Gracian

Why You Should Surprise Your Significant Other

When was the last time you surprised your significant other? Last week? Month? Year? If it’s been a while since you surprised your honey, it’s probably time you threw some twists into your relationship. Surprises can add a new dimension to your “lovefest” and show your significant other how much he or she means to you. Furthermore, surprises are always a lot of fun when you’re young and in love. Now, it’s entirely possible that you’re thinking, “Wait…I show my partner how much I love them every day, so why should I add surprises into the mix?”

Enhance the Love You Share

While it’s always important to show your significant other how much you care, it’s equally important to knock them off their feet from time to time. In other words, surprising your partner enhances the love you share – it does not define it. When you make the extra effort to do something sweet, loving, and thoughtful, it shows you’re committed to them and the relationship.

Worth the Effort

So it’s worth the extra effort. It doesn’t matter if you surprise your beloved with sweet musings, thoughtful gestures, and/or gift them with “me time.” Just doing something nice for the person you love can keep the fire sizzling in your relationship for many years to come. Listed below are ways you can surprise your significant other with the things he or she loves best.

Actionable Steps

Housework or chores.

Want to know a really great way to surprise your significant other – and make their day? Try doing your partner’s housework or chores for a day, weekend, or even week. What kinds of things should you do? How about doing the laundry and/or cooking a romantic dinner? Or, you could take the dog for a walk, change the baby’s diapers, take out the trash, wash the car or take it to get washed, and/or mow the lawn.
Again, make sure it’s your significant other’s routine housework or chore. All that’s required to make this surprise successful is to take a load off your partner’s shoulders.

Sweet messages.

Sweet messages are surprises that are sure to impress your sweetheart. Try recording some thoughtful words for your significant other. You can either text the message or leave a romantic voicemail on your partner’s smartphone. You could also place a thoughtful note in your partner’s lunchbox, wallet, gym bag, briefcase, purse, diaper bag, or pants or jacket pocket.
Another option is to place this sweet note under your partner’s pillow when they get up to go to the restroom or make coffee. Or how about going ancient and sending a sweet note through the “snail mail.” Crazy idea, huh? Of course, sometimes being old-fashioned is a good thing.
A few other ideas are posting your sweet note on social media (Facebook or Instagram), and/or using chalk, washable markers, or lipstick to write on the bathroom mirror just how much you love them.

Breakfast in bed.

Want to do something super romantic? How about surprising your significant other with breakfast in bed. You can find a slew of super cute and sexy breakfast-in-bed ideas here. Who doesn’t love a mountain of pancakes smothered in peaches, or chocolate, sausage links, freshly-squeezed orange juice, perfectly scrambled eggs, and/or juicy pineapple chunks and grapes for breakfast? After all, the way to a woman’s or man’s heart is through their stomach, right?
Want to make this surprise even more romantic? Draw a soothing, warm bubble bath for your significant other, then surprise them with a freshly-brewed cup of coffee (just the way they like it) when they get out of the tub. Top this surprise off with a sexy love letter complete with your lipstick or the scent of your cologne on it.

“Me time.”

An excellent way to surprise your significant other is to provide them with some “me time.” If you have kids, spend quality time with them so your partner can have time for himself or herself. For instance, take your kids to an arcade, park, bowling rink, a movie, skating, etc. Find something your kids like to do, then make a day of it. This will allow your beloved to do something he or she has been wanting to do but couldn’t because of parenting responsibilities.
If you want to give your partner an even bigger surprise, schedule a spa day for them, complete with a facial, hair wash, cut, and style, and/or a massage. Similarly, schedule some time for them to play golf or go shopping with buddies. The goal of “me time” is for your partner to do whatever makes them happy. Do not interrupt this time unless it’s an emergency.
