“Investing in yourself is the best investment you will ever make. It will not only improve your life, it will improve the lives of all those around you.”
~ Robin Sharma
With the access and affordability of online learning, now is a perfect time to pick up a new skill. Whether you are job searching, going up for a promotion, or just trying to better yourself, online certifications are a fantastic way to distinguish yourself during the hiring process and boost your resume and career.
According to Indeed, a certification is “a credential that demonstrates that you have the knowledge, experience, and specific skills needed for a specific field or job.”
While certifications are not the same as a professional license, certifications “assess and verify that a person has proficiency or even has mastered certain abilities and skills.” In turn, these skills can also then be applied to advance and grow in your career.
There are many options of online certifications available. With such a wide selection and number of choices, it is easy to get overwhelmed when seeking out which certification to pursue. Before you proceed with enrolling in an online certification program, remember that there are steps you should take before investing your time (and money, if applicable).
Of course, you want to spend your time (and possibly, money) wisely. So it is very important that you take time to do your research in advance to ensure you are selecting the select right certification for you, and a legitimate certification.

Due to COVID-19, higher education has implemented many changes regarding modes of instruction. Check with your local and state universities to see if they are offering any certifications or courses online. There is a chance that certifications that were previously only offered in-person, are now available online.
Note: Even if you have every good intention in the world, not all certifications are worth your time.
As you are doing research, trust your gut – if it seems too good to be true (A.k.a. if it is an extremely low time commitment or cost), then it is likely not a legitimate or well-respected certification.
As mentioned, there are lots of options for online certifications available. Below is a list of top-notch, career-boosting certifications you can earn online:

First thing’s first: research! Ensure that you have taken the time to do your research before proceeding with an online certification. That way, this investment in yourself is worthwhile and beneficial.
Speak with your supervisor and other professionals in the field about recommended certifications to pursue. Often times, the company will even cover the cost if it pertains to your current position.
Take a look at your local and state universities to see if they are offering any certifications or courses online.
Just as doing the research takes time, so does the certification itself; reputable certifications take time to complete. After choosing the right certification for you, be patient as you move forward with it. In order to retain as much information as possible, try not to rush through the process. You will get out of it what you put into it!
