Est. Reading Time: 2 Minutes

When we think of the word “purpose,” we often think of something transformational. Something massive. Something epic.

Purpose is such a loaded word that it’s hard not to conjure up grand ideas of making the world a better place.

But instead of trying to end world hunger or inspire humanity to be at its best, think about what’s important to YOU.

Sure, purpose is not only about us. There is a COMMUNITY aspect involved, and a sense of creating IMPACT in lives beyond just our own.

But thinking too far ahead or grand can actually prevent you from taking the first steps toward discovering what your purpose actually is, especially when your purpose can evolve or expand over time.

Finding Your Purpose

We often believe that finding our purpose happens when we look from the inside OUT; in other words, when we focus on what the world is missing, what our life is missing, or what we can ultimately make better.

But our purpose has been inside us all this time. We just have to unravel it.

That is, we have to look from the outside IN to really discover what it is that will actually bring meaning and fulfillment to our lives.

By looking inward, we arrive at the core of what truly makes us happy, fulfilled, and at peace.

And it’s often the case that what we originally thought to be our purpose is actually something much different. But at the same time, something more MEANINGFUL.

For example, you may enjoy volunteering your free time for a cause that matters a lot to you. You have a busy life and career, and can’t dedicate all the time that you want toward this activity, but you try to squeeze in as much time as possible.

At first glance it may not seem like much, but what if your purpose (or at least part of it) is to use your gifts, talents, and potential to serve this cause?

Sure, the impact may be limited to just a small group of people in your community, but is this impact meaningful to you?

It’s the MEANINGFUL part that is so important to focus on, because without a sense of meaning our lives can feel empty, shallow, and without any sort of goal or direction.

When we take the time to understand the meaning behind what we do and what we ultimately want, we’ll get a better sense of what our purpose actually is.

Actionable Steps

1

Make a List of Things That Bring You Joy and Fulfillment

Consider how they relate to each other and how they can be connected in your life. Can you spend more time doing these things as volunteer work or with your social groups?

2

Focus on Your Purpose Every Day

This doesn’t necessarily mean you should quit your job and spend all your time on what you’re passionate about. But you should find time every day to work toward your purpose, even if it’s just spending a few minutes making a list of goals or deciding how to tackle one.
