There is no better investment in life than spending quality time with your family. However, it is important to understand that the term “family” can refer to anyone who is important to you. For instance, you may view a close friend as a “sister” or a childhood buddy as your “brother.” This individual may mean as much, if not more, to you than your biological sister or brother, so in this sense, he or she is your “family.”

The meaning of “family”

In other words, a family is not just comprised of a bunch of people who live in the same house and share the same last name; rather, the true definition of “family” is a group of people who are connected in some way. Moreover, these individuals are there for you through thick-and-thin, and good and bad. A few benefits of spending quality time with your family are familiarity, comfort, support, safety, and a feeling of belonging.

No one “gets” you better than your family. They may not be perfect, but knowing that someone has your back and is there for you if you need them is invaluable. At the end of the day, spending quality time with your loved ones not only improves your mood but also your mental and physical health.

What family quality time can do for you

Boost self-esteem and self-confidence

Spending quality time with your family can boost your self-esteem and self-confidence. Researchers suggest that people who spend quality time with their loved ones on a regular basis are more confident and self-assured. They also feel more comfortable voicing their beliefs and opinions because they know they have their families’ support. As a result, they tend to be more sociable and have an easier time developing strong friendships.

Adults who grew up feeling loved and valued by their families are more likely to have higher self-esteems and self-confidences.

Encourage positive behaviors

Spending quality time with family members also encourages positive behaviors, such as sharing, being empathetic and considerate, tolerant and patient, and thoughtful and kind towards others. These individuals learn these behaviors early in life from their parents and other loved ones.

In fact, according to a study on the effects of family “togetherness” and behavior, adolescents and young adults who eat meals with their families on a regular basis are happier and more successful in both their personal lives and their careers than those who rarely or never eat meals with loved ones.

Spending quality time with family also strengthens a bond between its members. In other words, families who unite over shared interests and activities tend to have stronger bonds and healthier relationships. They are also better at coping with stress and difficulties.

Spending quality time together, as a family, is essential because it fosters healthy eating habits. When family members prepare, sit down, and eat meals together, they tend to be healthier than those who eat separately.

Create memories

Another good reason for investing in family time is because you can create memories that will last a lifetime. Most young adults cherish childhood memories, especially the ones that involve loved ones and family members. Some common memories include Christmas celebrations, Thanksgiving gatherings, birthday surprises, sleepovers, parties, Halloween festivities, weddings, births, family vacations, achievements, etc.

One of the best ways to retain important family memories is to take pictures and post them on social media. This is such a great way because social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) reminds you of memories you have long forgotten. Another good way is to make digital photobooks with your most precious memories printed inside.

Prepare a 4 course meal together

A great way to bond with your family is to prepare a 4-course meal (appetizer, soup or salad, main course, and dessert) together. Creating something with the people you love can be a ton of fun! It doesn’t matter how young or old you are – the goal is to spend quality time together doing something you all love.
 
Search the web or flip through one of your family’s gourmet cookbooks and pick the dishes you want to prepare for dinner. Make a list of the ingredients and send a person out for them a few hours before you start preparing the dishes. Assign one or two family members (depending on the number of participants) to a particular dish and get started.
 
Turn on some music and dance around the kitchen while you work, and do not beat yourself or other family members up if a dish doesn’t come out exactly as planned. You’re not expert chefs after all. Laugh, talk, and have fun while you prepare your masterpieces. Then, sit down and enjoy the meal, as a family.

Go on vacation

Another good way to spend quality time with your family is to go on a family vacation. Moreover, try to schedule this vacation at least once a year – when all members can go. The best memories I had as a child were traveling all around the world with my parents.
 
I loved learning about different cultures with my loved ones. But, what I loved most was being with my family during these exciting times. You don’t have to go to extravagant or foreign locations to have a blast with your loved ones – all that matters is that you are together. Camping, going to amusement parks, or visiting nearby cities can be just as fun – as long as you do it with the people you love most.

Play together

All work and no play makes for a boring family. An awesome way to bond with your family is to play together. Find a hobby or activity you all love or you are all interested in and do it together! It doesn’t matter if it’s an indoor game like Monopoly or WAR, or outdoor activities like beach volleyball, kickball, or tag. The only thing that matters is you are together and enjoying each other’s company.
