“For years my wedding ring has done its job. It has led me not into temptation, reminded my husband numerous times at parties that it’s time to go home. It has been a source of relief to a dinner companion, and it has been a status symbol in the maternity ward.”

~ Erma Bombeck

It’s a bit scary to find a great engagement ring

There’s a lot of pressure that comes with selecting the right ring to propose with. Any old ring simply will not do – regardless of if you are picking out the ring for your partner or your partner is picking out their own ring. The mood, tone, and ring must be perfect (in your eyes and in your partner’s eyes) for everything to go as you’ve envisioned. The time, location, attendees, environment, and even the style and cut of the engagement ring must be on-point – or you risk having your partner possibly say “No!”

Disclaimer

If you’ve gotten to the point where you feel secure enough to ask your significant other to marry you, there’s little chance he/she will turn you down. Just FYI. You can breathe now. Still, all of these things can alter how your big moment plays out. And, honestly, nothing feels better than wowing the love of your life with the ring of their dreams.

Picking the right one

So, where can you find a great engagement ring – one that your partner will go nuts over? Well, that’s a tall order, but luckily this article can point you in the right direction. Purchasing a great engagement ring is an art form and one that many young people simply haven’t fully mastered. But, that’s perfectly okay, because now you have help. Really good help.

Picking a great engagement ring involves more than the number of carets in a diamond.

In fact, the most expensive ring may not be the best engagement ring for your partner. Rather, a great ring is one that fits their style, attitude, and preference. It reflects who they are as a person and as your future spouse.

Private jewelers

What’s a private jeweler? Well, Joanne Wright and Company, Brian & Nick, and Genesis Diamonds are all examples of private jewelers. These jewelers are ideal if you already know what you’re looking for. More specifically, if you don’t need to do much browsing before making your selection.

You can also get a custom-made engagement ring from a private jeweler, which means you can design the perfect ring for your partner – one that fits them perfectly. You may even get better pricing from a private jeweler than you’ll get from a nationally-known jewelry store. It just depends on the ring.

The main downside of going with a private jeweler is the cost. If you have a limited amount of money to spend on the engagement ring, this may not be the best option for you, as engagement rings from private jewelers can get pretty pricey. However, if you have a little change to spare and some extra time, you can custom-design an great engagement ring for your big proposal.

Nationally-known jewelry stores

The great thing about popular jewelry stores is they are nationally-known and accessible. They are also known for their extensive selections and good financing options. What are nationally-known jewelry stores? Well, have you ever seen a Jared Jewelry commercial? That’s a nationally-known jewelry store. Other jewelry stores include: Pandora, Kay, and Zales. Other budget-friendly places to get engagement rings include: JCPenny, Walmart, and Target.

Another plus? These stores tend to be affordable and some even allow you to swap out your old ring for a new one – at a reduced price! So, if you are looking for a lot of options because you’re not quite sure what you’re going to get yet, check out a nationally-known “big box” jewelry store. You may be able to get a bang for your buck when it comes to finding a great ring for your partner – one you both will cherish for the rest of your lives.

Keep in mind that the lighting in the display cases is designed to maximize the luster and appearance of the ring. In other words, it’s not a true representation of what the ring will look like in natural light. If possible take the ring close to a window to see if it’s really what you want before you purchase it.

4

Familial or societal pressure

When shopping for the right engagement ring for your significant other, you may want to consider looking online. Nowadays, there are tons of online jewelry stores. This is especially beneficial if you can’t get to one or if you haven’t found what you’re looking for through more traditional means – i.e. brick-and-mortar jewelry stores. You can find both traditional engagement rings and more creative ones online.

Some of the more popular online jewelry stores include: Brilliant Earth, Overstock, James Allen, Blue Nile, ForeverMark, Ebay, Etsy, and Amazon. The great thing about these jewelry stores is you can take your time and look through the selections multiple times before making a final decision. You can also find rings to fit all types of budgets, along with rings that are “unconventional” or “different.” Because of these factors you have a greater chance of picking a great engagement ring for your partner.
