Why Is Finding Purpose in Life So Important?

Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose in life? And why is finding purpose in life so elusive?
You may have asked yourself these questions at some point, but it sometimes feels like there is never really a clear answer. We can spend years reflecting, asking questions, counseling others, and yet it still doesn’t shed light sometimes into the mystery that is our existence.
At some point, nearly all of us give up trying.
We get swept into the day-to-day “reality” of life, becoming busier as we seek new things to occupy our mind. We can be so consumed by getting ahead in life, that we fail to realize getting ahead is simply not possible if we don’t know where we actually started from. How do we even define getting ahead without a starting point? What is our origin? And why did we enter this race in the first place?
The answer to this is much greater than we might think.

What is the purpose of life? It’s perhaps one of the most asked questions in all of human history—and for good reason.
Without understanding what it is that we‘re actually supposed to do on this planet, life can remain a complete mystery.
For most of us, that can be really terrifying. We hate mysteries, uncertainty, and the feeling of not knowing or being distant from the Truth. We might even believe that just knowing the Truth can be enough to be at peace and to feel fulfilled.
But just knowing the Truth is not enough. We must act upon it.
Wisdom without action is not really useful at all. It’s as if we’re filling our cup (e.g. our mind) with water (e.g. wisdom), but not drinking from that cup at all (e.g. taking action or putting it into practical use). That is, we will never truly feel nourished until we make use of this wisdom.
But even if we understand this, are we even asking the right question in the first place? Does life really have a purpose, and if so, can we ever find it?
Deep down, at the core of our existence, we all have a life purpose to fulfill, or put simply, a reason to live. This purpose often dwells behind the scenes in our daily lives. We may get glimpses of what it is from time to time, but we need to actively tune into the right frequency to understand what it actually means and to know for sure that it really is our purpose.
What do I mean by tuning into the right frequency? I mean being at the right level of consciousness to look past the surface of our daily life, and to ask and ponder the deep questions of our existence. Why do we feel drawn to certain areas of life—passions, activities, and interests—and not others? How come we feel this internal voice guiding us toward one path (e.g. a career or calling) and not another? Are our likes and dislikes just random things or are they guiding us closer to something meaningful?
That right frequency is always there for us to access. It’s like a TV channel—we simply have to flip to the right one. But flipping to the right channel doesn’t happen by itself. We need to pick up the remote and physically press the buttons to get to where we want to go. Similarly, we have to make the right life choices to actually find that right frequency.
But before we can actively tune into the right frequency to find our purpose, we need to examine why it’s so important to do so in the first place. Why care about this purpose “mumbo jumbo” at all, when you can seemingly find success or happiness without it? In fact, you don’t need to know your purpose to get into a top university, find a job, buy a car or house, or virtually any other external measure of achieving success in life. So, what’s the big deal?
The big deal is that when we pursue these external things without an appreciation of the internal, everything we achieve begins to lose value very quickly. When you don’t tune into the right frequency to start finding your purpose, life eventually becomes repetitive, boring and unfulfilling. We suffer from the “same stuff, different day” mentality, with the days all blending as one and appearing meaningless at times.
Even when we do enter new stages of our lives, acquire new things, and develop new relationships, the novelty quickly wears off. We then find ourselves in a constant need to find the next great thing out there, rather than connecting with the great thing in here—in ourselves—which offers peace and fulfillment in every stage of life, and more importantly, guides us to the mission we are ultimately meant to accomplish.
The journey to true and lasting fulfillment in life can only begin from within and from finding purpose in life. We need to go deeper into who we are and why we were brought to this Earth in the first place. It’s perfectly fine to have a job or career, to spend time with our loved ones, and to indulge on occasion in the things that give us entertainment and pleasure. But eventually, we will all come to a time where not pursuing our purpose will nag away at us for the rest of our lives—something that we simply can’t ignore—until we actually do something about it.
